Chavonna James
A senior at Mastery Charter, Chavonna James started working with ASAP this year as a community service component of her senior project. However, her work with ASAP was not merely to fulfill a requirement. Chavonna made it clear to ASAP staff that she plans to become a teacher, and she realized being an ASAP club leader would be a fantastic opportunity to learn how to work with students and design weekly lesson plans.
Chavonna has been leading a music club at Harrity Elementary School, where she is teaching students lessons in singing, reading and writing music, and the history of different musical styles. Often, Chavonna brings in her keyboard so the students can work on writing their own song, which they can sing and share with each other.
Recently, Chavonna organzied an American Idol contest at Harrity for the dedicated participants of her club. The students were equipped with yellow tickets and gifts. Each student was given the opportunity to sing a song, and they were graded according to a score sheet that Chavonna designed. Chavonna, her brother Chikezie, and her mother, comprised the panel of judges, and the students eagerly performed their songs for each of them.
Chavonna has been an innovative and commited volunteer, even as a high school student. She is making plans to attend college next year and study education in order to one day be a teacher. From what she has given as an ASAP club leader, it seems certain she will be a wonderful teacher in the future.
